Qualifying Sail Details

Departed Berkeley, May 10, 13:30.  Entire crew on board: James Isbester, John Hassard, Jennifer Miller, Julia Cooper, Liam Lautze. Winds W, touching 35 knots.  We took a sheltered path along the Marin shore, behind Angel Island, to get to the Gate.  From there, we headed for the Lightship, then turned north inside the Farralones, sailing through the night on a course roughly parallel to and to the west of the north ship channel. By Saturday morning, the wind had died and fog had set in.  We were randomly pushed around by the tide until about 15:00.  Then we started the engine and motored west, finally picking up some wind about the Cordell Bank.  We sailed a little further west, on a close hauled course in 10 knots of NW breeze,  and then turned back towards San Francisco about 17:00.  We flew the spinnaker to the Gate, dropping it as we re-entered the shipping lanes, and sailed on the jib and main in a W wind, 9 knots, and a strong flood tide bringing us home.  We arrived back at Berkeley Marina about 04:30 on Sunday, May 12.  Total distance, 165 miles; total time, 38 hours.
